The Harlem Gospel Choir is one of the pre-eminent gospel choirs in the world. It travels the globe, sharing its joy of faith through its music, & raising funds for children's charities. The Choir was founded in 1986 by Allen Bailey, who got the idea for the Choir while attending a celebration in honor of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. at the renowned Cotton Club in Harlem. The Choir is a gathering of the finest singers and musicians from various Black Churches in Harlem.
The Choir has shared its message of love, peace and harmony for many years with thousands of people from various nations, backgrounds, and cultures. The Harlem Gospel Choir strives to make the world a more loving and peaceful place, and through its music and dynamic performance creates a better understanding of the African-American culture and the inspirational music called Gospel as it relates to the Black Church. The theme of every performance is bringing people and nations together and giving something back. The Choir's songs of gospel and inspiration will touch the depths of your soul and raise your spirits to angelic heights.
2006 was the Choir's 20th anniversary. In recognition of its role as " "Cultural Ambassadors of Harlem", the Choir received congratulatory proclamations from Congressman Charles Rangel; from Lieutentant Governor David Patterson; and from New York City's Mayor Michael Bloomberg who proclaimed the Choir's 20th anniversary, January 15, 2006 to be "Harlem Gospel Choir Day" in New York City!
The Choir also collaborated in unique concerts with: the grammy-winning band Gorillaz for 5 historical, never-to-be-repeated shows at the Apollo Theater in Harlem; with Avril Lavigne; with Yolanda Adams; with Cindy Lauper; with Polish star Natalia Kukulska; and with Andre Rieu and his Johann Strauss Orchestra at Radio City Music Hall and in the Netherlands.
